Why Premium Lenses (IOLs)
As we age, the eye undergoes multiple changes that affect our vision, in addition to cataracts.

Did you ever wonder why people need reading glasses when they turn 40?
One of those changes is called presbyopia. As the eye ages, we can no longer focus on intermediate and near objects. This is why reading glasses are necessary for most people over the age of 40.

Have you ever wondered why some people have needed glasses at all distances?
A second change that happens as we age is astigmatism, in which the eye loses its optimal shape, distorting light before it reaches the retina of the eye. Many people with this condition have blurry vision at all distances.

Basic monofocal IOLs cannot treat presbyopia or astigmatism, while premium IOLs can treat both presbyopia and astigmatism, so you can enjoy your life without glasses or contact lenses that you had when you were younger!

Dr. Broussard will check for astigmatism and presbyopia and make a premium lens recommendation based on your hobbies, activities, and vision goals. In addition to basic monofocal lenses, which help you see at far distances only, Dr. Broussard offers the latest toric, multifocal and extended depth of field lenses to help you obtain the best vision possible for your unique situation and goals.

The five types of Premium Intraocular Lenses we offer are:

• Toric – This lens aims to address any astigmatism you may have. Astigmatism is responsible for blurry or distorted vision at all distances.
• Multifocal – This lens utilizes tiny rings on the surface of the lens to provide different focus points so you can view images near and far. This is similar to having a multifocal pair of glasses that have distinct focal points.
• Extended Depth of Focus — This lens also provides continuous focal points so you can view images near and far. This is similar to a pair of prescription progressive lens glasses.
• Tecnis Symfony Lenses — This lens combines the benefits of progressive focal points and also astigmatism correction.
• High Definition Monofocal – This lens is made out of a material with superior optical qualities, providing more vibrant colors with less peripheral distortion when compared to a basic monofocal intraocular lens. The High Definition Monofocal lens provides clear vision at one focal point.

PREMIUM LENS FAQ

How quickly will my vision improve following surgery?
Your vision may be mildly blurry in the first few days following surgery. However, as your eyes heal and your brain adapts, you will notice increasing improvements in your distance, intermediate, and near vision. The results are such that the majority of patients can pass the driver’s license vision test and read newspapers without glasses.

Does insurance cover Premium Lens Cataract Surgery?
For patients with cataracts, Medicare and insurance companies generally cover a large portion of the surgery. An additional upgrade fee is required to obtain premium lenses. Our surgical specialists can tell you the portion of your surgery that will be covered by your insurance, as well as assist you with financing options as needed.
